Chowkidar

Chowkidar is the journal of the British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia (BACSA). It has been published twice a year for the last forty years, under the same editor. Chowkidar means ‘a watchman’ in Hindustani, and this is BACSA’s role - to watch over old European, mainly British, cemeteries in South Asia. Where local support is available, funds for restoration are offered and over 120 projects have been successfully completed since BACSA was established in 1977. Chowkidar contains short articles about these cemeteries, and about searches by people today for the tombs of their ancestors. It has a ‘Can You Help?’ section and reviews of books with an Indian and South Asian flavour. BACSA welcomes new members and our website is: www.bacsa.org.uk. Digital Himalaya is delighted to serve as the onine host of this unique publication.
